The MFED 1-4 is the successor to the “MFED for the first year of life” and the “MFED for the second and third years of life”. Compared to the previous versions, the procedure has been systematically revised and re-standardized. This includes extensive changes in the test concept and tasks, as well as an expansion of the age range to include children from one to four years of age. The MFED 1-4 covers the same developmental areas as the previous versions, but the developmental stage is determined differently: The ladder model for determining developmental age in the previous versions has been replaced.
The developmental level of the MFED 1-4 is instead measured by 7 newly created scales:
Cognitive development;
Expressive language;
Language comprehension;
Fine motor development;
Gross motor development;
Social development;
Independence.
The total values (raw values) for all seven scales are calculated to determine the corresponding norms and age equivalents (developmental age) and reflect them in the developmental profiles. In addition, the total score of MFED 1-4 provides a measure of the child’s overall developmental level.
Compared to previous versions, the material package has been completely revised: many new materials have been created (e.g., instructions for use, protocol booklet, picture folders for cognition, expressive language, and language comprehension). The test and assessment forms, as well as the development profiles of previous versions, are no longer usable and will be replaced by the newly developed MFED 1-4 protocol booklet. Some materials from previous versions can still be used. An update package for the added test components is available.
